the barbados water problem
Water plays a huge role in Barbados everyday life. Not only is the island surrounded by water, it is a water based community as well.Whether you’re playing a game of volleyball, fishing, swimming, surfing, or just enjoying the a relaxing day on the clear-watered beach, water is a part of your life. Lucky, Barbados is home of most cleanest, purest water on the planet. the coral limestone rock is what helps purify the water so that it is crystal clean. The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) assures the island’s clean drinking water. The BWA says that dirty drinking water is a hazard. Water was first introduced to the island in 1861. The Barbadians used standpipes for the collection of water.
Now, 99% of Barbados has purified running tap water. Due to drought, increasing population, high standardized living and climate control, the Barbados water supply is highly suffering. Countries are now judged by the FAO for their state of food and water supply. If there is less than 1000 cubic meters of water in a country each year, it is consider as a water scarce country.
In 1995, 3,000 households were out of water. This same year in August, Bridgetown was without water so the people resorted into the local hospital. In March 2001, Barbados had one of its driest months ever since 1964 and 1977. It only received 5.7 millimeters of rainfall which was not a good sign. Since almost all of Barbados’s water supply regulates from rainfall, the island’s people weren’t receiving the water they needed to survive. This water shortage not only affects the peoples’ health, but agriculture, food a tourism as well. The water problem could also cause spark fire like back in 2001. The BWA built a massive water desalination plant in attempt to prevent a huge water crisis. These plants were the largest in the Caribbeans and were goaled to supplement the supply of drinking water in Barbados. In result to the desalination, all of the island’s home were encouraged to have their very own water tanks. Now newly built Barbadian home come equipped with a tank already. Houses over 2,000 square feet are required to have a tank that supplies up to 6,000 gallons of water. A 1,500- 1,999 square foot home is required to have a tanks that holds up to 3,000 gallons of water. (Water Is Life In Barbados)
